A lesson from the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Surah 37 verses 100 - 112)

  • He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!
  • "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"

  • So We gave him good news of a gentle son. Ready to suffer and forbear

  • Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer you in sacrifice: Now see what is your view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as you are commanded: you will find me, if Allah so wills one of the patients!"

  • So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),

  • We called unto him: O Abraham!

  • "You have already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed We reward those who do right.

  • Most surely this is a manifest trial.

  • And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:

  • And We praised him among the later generations

  • Peace and salutation to Abraham!"

  • Thus indeed We reward those who do right.

  • Surely he was one of Our believing servants.

Lessons we learn from this story:

  • Believing in Allah swt and trusting him absolutely.

  • Submitting to Allah’s command without doubt or second thoughts.

  • Following Allah’s orders and worshiping him the way He orders us not the way we like, even if it meant sacrificing our own sons.

  • Ismael’s submission to his father’s command shows how a true follower should react to the teachings of his leader.

Lets connect all this to our time.

We live in the time of the great occultation. Our imam is Imam Mehdi (as), so we should follow his command as Ismael did with his father Prophet Ibrahim. Submission to Imam’s command and rule should be of an absolute nature. So no second thoughts or doubt can be let into our thinking or reasoning.

The question is that Imam (as) is not present. We cant see him or contact him. At the same time Allah doesn’t want us to worship him the way we want but the way he wills. How can we have these two contradicting points together and still reach salvation. The answer is lets look at what imam has ordered us to refer to in the time of his absence.

Thus, the apparent leadership was entrusted to the jurists who conformed to the criteria as explained by Imam Ja’far as Sadiq (a.s.) in the. following tradition:

"From among the jurists, one who has control over his own lusts and desires (that is, he overcomes and stops his desires to take control over him) one who is the protector of his religion and is the obedient follower of the orders of his Imam (a.s.), then it is compulsory for the people to follow their orders in taqlid.. And this will be true only in case of some of the Shia scholars and not all.

(Wasaelush Shia Vol.18 Pg.95, Beharul Anwaar Vol.2 Pg.88)

and Imam-e-Zamana (a.s.) says about them:

"For new Problems refer to those who narrate our sayings. For certainly they are my Hujjat upon you and I am the Hujjat of Allah upon them. One who rejects them rejects us and our rejection is the rejection of Allah."

(Ref.: Kamaluddin Pg.484, Beharul Anwaar Vol.53, Pg. 1 81, Wasaelush Shia Vol.18 Pg.101)
